The Dexter-Miller Community - North West Ann Arbor Description and Application 5/15/2009
Mission
The Dexter-Miller Community (DEXMIL) is a non-profit neighborhood services cooperative. Members are willing to exchange services with each other to simplify and enhance their quality of life. Members agree that every service exchanged in the community has equal value based solely on the time spent providing it and that everyone has something to offer.
Membership
Membership is limited to 50-100 households in Northwest Ann Arbor (West of Main St. and North of Jackson-Huron). Initiation fee is $15.00 and annual dues are $10.00 per household. Household members' names and contact information together with services and equipment offered are listed in a Community Directory which is provided only to other community members.
Accounting System
Members receive scrip worth 16 DEXMILS (DM) upon joining and earn more by providing services or lending equipment to others in the community. One DM equals fifteen minutes of service or one hour’s loan of equipment. Under special circumstances the Board of Directors may sell or grant additional DM to specific households. If needed, households may request an additional 8 DM each year when renewing membership.
Process
A Directory listing the services and equipment offered for loan by each household is updated periodically. Members seeking services or equipment search the Directory for a household offering that service or equipment. They then call or email a provider and arrange the exchange. Personal and Repair Contractors recommended by other coop members are listed on our website with contact information and satisfaction ratings. Some service contractors offer discounts when working for several neighbors during the same time period.

No household will be excluded from membership due to inability to pay dues or offer services. If one or both of these requirements are a problem, please attach a note explaining your circumstances.
Liability and Insurance Waiver:
To avoid buying an expensive group insurance policy protecting us from suing each other while trying to help each other, members are asked to sign a Release and Waiver of Liability form. The waiver together with reliance on volunteer services for most assistance is the key to keeping our dues to a minimum. Signing the waiver is optional but those who have not signed are indicated in the Directory and are less likely to be contacted for exchanges. Co-owners of the same house must both sign the waiver even if only one will be active in the community.
